Vancouver Island the largest coastal Island in North America is home to some of the largest trees in North America. There is only 6.4 percent of the most endangered low-elevation old-growth rainforest left on Vancouver Island. Thanks to two individuals, Watt & Wu, and an organization called the Ancient Forest Alliance Organization, has outlined areas of some of the last first growth temperate rain forest on Vancouver Island. Some of these areas have now become protected as a result of forest preservation activism and constant government lobbying. https://www.ancientforestalliance.org/ Still work needs to be done and every day new areas are being targeted for commercial removal. Port Renfrew and the Ancient Forest Alliance has come under the stewardship of some of these areas in particular. Avatar Grove, Eden Grove, Lonely Doug, Big Red Creek Fir, Gordon River Spruce Tree, Canada’s Gnarliest Tree and more. The Ancient Forest Alliance has been working to protect our last remaining old-growth forest trees and forests and to ensure a sustainable, second-growth forest industry for now and our future. Avatar Grove Visiting Avatar Grove is just a short 20 minute drive from the town of Port Renfrew. Driving directions from Victoria. Time: approx. 2.5 hours. Ancient Forest Alliance first discovered Avatar Grove in 2009 and named it after the James Cameron film Avatar. This is where Canada’s Gnarliest Tree can be found. It is approx. 33 feet in circumference, 230 feet in height and is over 1,000 years old. There are two parts to Avatar Grove and the Gnarliest Tree is located in the upper part of Avatar Grove. Over the past years, the Ancient Forest Alliance has worked hard to construct boardwalk throughout much of the grove but good balance and basic hiking experience is required in certain areas ie. possible muddy sections, slippery roots or slopes, logs, etc. The trail is not like Cathedral Grove and the last few kilometres of driving are along a rough logging road.
